"Mercedes Streeter" (smart)

So, I got my new 6P in the mail yesterday, and omg, it’s a glorious phone. It’s my first “phablet” sized device and...I don’t think I’m ever going back to small.
Unfortunately, my journey to this phone hasn’t been easy. I’ve been using a Droid Mini in the interim between the S7 being shipped away and receiving this 6P.
The largest problem with the Droid Mini was that the darned thing couldn’t receive text messages. It’ll send just so perfectly, and the phone did everything else without a single issue whatsoever...it just would not receive SMS text messages. Now, it was able to receive MMS picture messages, but never ever texts.
As a test, I put my SIM (Verizon) back into the S7 one more time before shipping it out, and it received texts no issues...put it back into the Droid Mini, aaaaand nothing. I wrote it off as an issue with the Droid.
Now, with the 6P, the issues continue. No texts received at all...this is a brand new phone, there shouldn’t be any firmware issues. I even upgraded to Android 7.0, cannot receive texts. It will receive a text maybe once every few hours after fiddling around with the SIM card, but for the most part, it does not receive texts at all, just like the Droid Mini.
So, what gives? Why would a brand new phone not receive texts, but do everything else perfectly as designed? While I know a lot about Android/iOS and such, I know little about cellular technologies (outside of ESN/IMEI/blacklisting etc)...is my SIM the culprit here? Does this SIM only work with the S7 or something?
Have a GT for your time. :)
Update
So, I went to a Verizon store last night. They wouldn’t give me a new SIM unless I had the Galaxy on me (well, let me tell you about that...), so they just blocked/unblocked my texting.
This allowed my phone to work with texting for like, 1 hour...then it borked again.
This morning, I called VZW tech support directly, and the guy on the phone noticed that the Galaxy was refused to let go of the account like Rose refused to let go of Jack. Somehow that was robbing my ability to receive texts.
Well then, he decided to simply nuke my SIM/phone off the network entirely. After which, I rebooted my phone and the SIM card registered the 6P on Verizon’s network. I’m not holding my breath, but 6 hours so far, texting still works.

My phone doesn’t get text messages either. It’s not broken, I just don’t have any friends.

maybe its something to do with the compatibility between the sim itself and the phone? (locked/unlocked phone)

Get the sim card changed and go from there. If it’s carrying over from phone to phone it’s the only common denominator.

Have you tired updating the phone? If not it may be the SIM

I think that’s what I’m going to do, I mean I have done literally everything else short of putting CM on the phone. lol

All three phones in this case are unlocked, but I wonder what trickery Verizon has done with that SIM so that just that one single function only works on Galaxy phones lol.

I updated it to the latest version of Nougat, after which texting worked for a split second, and it’s never been back since.

Sounds like you’ll have to change the SMS Message Centre Settings (SMSC) for your device.
A quick Google search should get you on your way.
EDIT: This should work, but the method for your phone may vary.
First of all, you need to call your customer service and ask for the correct message centre number. Unfortunately this is the only way for getting it. Then, you must change it manually.
Once you have the correct number go on the SMS application from your smartphone.
Tap on “Menu” and then on “Settings”.
Look for the “Message centre” and select it.
When you open the up-mentioned option you will be able to edit the number.
Enter the correct one and tap on “Ok”.
Send a message to see if it works.
Done.

I was, however that was under a different Verizon account. Surprisingly, the iPhone 6 to Nexus 5X transition was easy without pain. All my iPhone contacts were able to text me right out of the box.
The saddest thing is that the text messages in question today are coming from Google and Verizon based numbers, so they have no reason not to work. lol
Maaaaaaybe Verizon is fed up with me taking advantage of the new generation of smartphones in which they’re all unlocked, and thus easy to swap out when you get bored with them.

Well don’t throw it in a car on the seat either... then someone might sit on it. :P

I don’t follow Android phones all that closely, but is it confirmed that the unlocked version of the 6P functions on Verizon’s CDMA network and not just their LTE network?
SMS still uses CDMA to my knowledge.

Well damn, that’s a cool menu. Looks like I’m going to have to pay a visit to VZW either way though as calling them would likely take foreeeever. :(

Gotta be the SIM or some APN settings.

Oh yes, The Nexus phones are designed to work with all of the major US carriers (Project Fi piggybacks off pretty much everyone’s towers) so it should work right out of the box. I’m guessing there was something else with the SMS that VZW did with the SIM...

Do you know anyone you could swap SIMs with for a while to see if the network makes a difference?
Otherwise I’m fresh out of troubleshooting ideas.

Nah, I’m just going to go to the VZW store on the way home from work, request a new SIM. Hooooopefully that rectifies it.

Awesome phone. I have the Matte Gold 64GB and it’s gorgeous.
Be weary, my original 6p got a kink in the body right by the volume rocker and I had to RMA it, so that sucked, but whatever, the replacement looks just as good so no biggie.
Also, the battery life is amazing on this thing.

Good luck. After my second Nexus 6P died I got an iPhone 7. It is going to be a while before I try another phone from Google.

How...how did it die?
I’ve just learned about the bending issue, and I’m not too worried about it since my phone are usually never subjected to any forces. Plus, I don’t see many bending reports in 2016, so maybe it was an early build issue. But what other issues did you deal with?

I never had any issues with bending.
The first one started having vertical green lines on the display about 5 or 6 months in. After a couple hours parts of the screen wouldn’t work at all. I was on a business trip in Canada at the time. At the airport trying to check in to my flight from Toronto to Montreal.
The second one had the boot loop issue about 3 months in the day before I was about to fly to Germany.
I travel enough that I need a phone that just works or one that I can walk in and replace/buy in an emergency. If I could have walked into Best Buy (or other major popular retailer) and swapped it out for an unlocked Pixel without hassle I would have. Instead they wanted to send me another 6P. Nope. I don’t have the time and I don’t want to take the risk.

Whew, so just weird crap I can live with. :)
Hmmm...display failure could be a ribbon cable issue. I had an iPhone 5 that had that issue. Apparently I bumped it into something wrong and somehow knocked the cable loose. Although, screen failures usually start the same way as a loose ribbon does, so idk lol.
Boot loop I could fix so long as the logic board doesn’t take a vacation.
Honestly, I wanted a Pixel XL more than the 6P, but I’m not willing to sink almost $800 into a phone. I like the freedom of being able to basically sell a phone for about what I paid it for, then trying something new. :)

I went from an iPhone 6+ to this same Nexus and I’ll never switch back. I find the 6p to have about the same build quality (Huawei made) as I have come to expect from iphones, but I got tired of the software (iOS). I considered a Huawei p9, but the stock android experience on this 6p won the argument.
